Developing cultural heritage in a more sustainable way. New approaches and examples from practice. "Open Heritage" is a response to the urgent need for a more open definition of cultural heritage, of the parties involved in protecting and maintaining it, and of the relevant planning processes in order to ensure the sustainable reuse of cultural heritage in times of climate change, social inequality and social plurality. This book introduces in a clear and systematic manner the results of the EU-funded OpenHeritage project, which examined best practices in different European countries. It focuses on the idea of inclusive heritage management based on community-driven processes. The aim of the research is to investigate how the set of artistic practices known as public art can create an area of co-design between landscape architecture, urban design and urban art. In recent years, art in the public space has gradually expanded from a conventional idea of monument to the idea of a sign contributing to urban regeneration: a sign building identity, a space creating relationships and relational processes. The research therefore aims to reflect and interpret the concepts that go in this direction, in the possibility of promoting their evolution that tends towards the definition of art, or rather the artistic act, not as an element of the urban scene, but as a process aimed at promoting a multidisciplinary dialogue. Art in/for/with the urban landscape can be read as a tool, as one of the possible means that can activate design processes.

Um 1900 entwickelte die Heimatschutzbewegung aus dem Volkstumsdiskurs heraus eine identitätspolitische Spielart der Moderne, die eine eigene Architekturprogrammatik einschloss. Rainer Schmitz untersucht deren Entstehung und Konzeption durch Akteure des 1904 gegründeten »Bundes Heimatschutz« wie Ernst Rudorff, Paul Schultze-Naumburg oder Otto March. Im Fokus seiner Sondierungen steht die Übersetzung gesellschaftlicher Konstrukte und Phänomene wie der »sozialen Frage«, Heimat, Volkstum oder Antisemitismus in den Baudiskurs sowie deren Architektonisierung in Projekten wie den Nationalstadien oder der »deutschen Ostkolonisation«. Damit trägt er u.a. zur Debatte über die Konstruktion kollektiver Identitäten bei.

The basement of the façade of the San Rufino at Assisi is part of the newly erected Cathedral, which can be dated between 1140 and about 1240. Its extensive décor shows the self-confidence of its sole initiators, the Canons of the Cathedral.On the one hand the present treatise is addressed at the differentiated planar structuring on behalf of a large-scaled framing with a salient arched corbel course and the debate of its derivation. Thereby the framing of the reliefs next to the main portal on the façade of San Pietro fuori le mura at Spoleto receives specific consideration, also in comparison with the different types of relief-framing of several churches in the southwestern Mediterranean area. On the other hand the diversified decorative repertoire of the façade-basement at Assisi is brought into focus in this treatise. In this context special attention is paid to the so far rudimentarily investigated motives of the presentations, their origin and distribution.

This book investigates the evolution of rusticated facings in perhaps one of the most significant contexts for their history, namely the architecture of the 15th century in Florence, where the development of this type of masonry intertwines with that of the buildings constructed over the century. Their main distinctive trait is naturalism, which in different shapes and degrees permeates every facing, thus becoming a sort of local inflection, which contaminates even the most up-to-date languages. The Florence renovatio of ancient architecture passes indeed from the masonries, as pointed out by many writings from that period, which describe their contemporary rusticated facings and compare them to the massif ancient opus quadratum. While accepting the lesson on magnificence by the Julio-Claudian rustication, Florence facings would never become a faithful reproduction of the Roman models, but would always retain traditional characters and patterns, constantly oscillating between an expressive freedom and a yearning for the rigour of form.
